Driving sustainable operations

We lead by example an work to minimise the environmental impact of our operations. Bringing our CO2 emissions to net zero by 2030 is our key target.

Mitigating climate change risks is at the heart of Swiss Re's core re/insurance business. Reflecting our thought leadership in corporate climate action, we are taking action in reducing our CO2 emissions in our operations, specifically to reach net-zero emissions as early as 2030. This effort builds on a series of previous pioneering initiatives such as our Greenhouse Neutral Programme or the RE100 Initiative.

Our CO2NetZero Programme

In 2019 we developed a plan for how to achieve net-zero emissions in our operations by 2030. This involves reducing our operational emissions through measures such as decreasing our flights and increasing energy efficiency. We are also pioneering in setting a meaningful real internal carbon levy of USD 100 to USD 200 per tonne of CO2 – the first at the triple-digit level set by a multinational company on both direct and indirect emissions (such as business travel). The funds from this levy will be used to support carbon removal projects to compensate our residual operational emissions.
